In seeking logo inspiration for this site, my mind kept returning to this lovely talavera tile I’d come across when researching Spanish architecture. I’ve always been drawn to the colors- the cheerful, harmonious mix of blues with accents of green and yellow. If I ever get the chance to design a Spanish-style kitchen, this is the pattern I would choose!
Symbolism of Color
When designing a logo, it can be helpful to take into account the symbolism and psychology of what color conveys. In our case, the colors represent our hopes for our new life in Spain:
- Blues: Tied to the color of the ocean by which we’ve made our new home, blue represents tranquility and harmony
- Yellow: The sunniness of Spain is legendary, representing optimism and happiness
- Green: The green mountains of Murcia reflect our goals of growth and health goals
Logo Creation
At first I tried to generate a logo from sites like Fiver Logo Maker in the interest of saving time, but I should’ve known that I wouldn’t be happy with the generic results. They got the basic idea right though- I wanted a logo that represented us. We are a family. A family of six. We are all equally important, connected, and interdependent.
Design
I replaced the flower in the center of the talavera tile with a compass to represent travel and adventure. And I used the imagery of the people above to represent each of the six of us. In an abstract way, each of these represent a person- you can see the head and two arms outstretched.
I created two versions of the logo- one more simple that relied on the white space as a design element and another more intricate version that pulled in the details from the tile. And then I sent out each version to family and friends to vote on . . . with the result that everyone was as equally split as we were! I like them both for different reasons.
Final Two Designs
But in the end, my oldest friend pointed out that the reason I love that talavera tile is because the focus is the design- not the white space. So with that excellent insight, I settled on the first one.
